![]() And so he has been acquitted, as we all anticipated. His loyalists never abandoned him, not really, even if some publicly wavered moments after he put their lives at risk. Because of that undying fealty, and despite what some pundits are saying, I fully believe he will run again. Why wouldn’t he? He craves the white-hot heat of that spotlight in the political crucible. He will crush all comers. As I watched the brilliant impeachment managers present their evidence last week, I alternated between traumatized, tearful, and comforted. Comforted because I realized how much I needed someone to confirm that this has all been real. I needed to see the horrors of his presidency presented in a cogent and organized way. Seeing the chaos neatly packaged helped me breathe again. It wasn’t just a terrifying, perpetual nightmare. Others saw it, too. Around the world, they were watching. I wish I could believe it is over. But his chilling words on Saturday tell us otherwise: “Our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun.” We are all exhausted, and I intend to heed our duly elected President’s calls to move on. But we must remain vigilant. We cannot allow our hope and our relief to blind us to the anger and the violence of Trump’s toxic brew. We watched it boil over on January 6. He will turn up the heat again.

Sallie, you're so right! It is exasperating knowing that there have been two opportunities to detox this nasty brew but cowardice 'trumped' doing the right thing. For four more years, anxiety of recurrence will plague an already beleaguered nation. Yes, we must remain vigilant!

It is not over, and vigilance is required. This is just a collective pause; I am not ready to invoke Elizabeth Kübler-Ross just yet. What used to be the pace of events measured in months now gets packed into days or weeks. The cynical fraudulence of McConnell now makes the Garland confirmation hearing on February 22-23 (another manipulated delay by Graham and the allies of the former president) the next battleground. The DOJ--once reconstituted in its proper form and independent role--becomes the tip of the spear, along with the state investigations in New York, Georgia, and D.C.

I am hoping there will be a civil suit or even better a criminal one. I heard on NPR this morning that a criminal charge would be difficult. I don't understand why it isn't some sort of crime to try to overthrow an election.

Trump has reached the apex of his power and influence. Those who think their political ambitions can be achieved by being Trump 2 are going to be left with the domestic terrorists Q people and the idiots like Ron Johnson and Lindsey Graham as their base. Increased marginalization will necessarily cause the GOP to reconstitute itself or die by the failure to attract new intelligent representatives with an agenda other than hate and grievance. Also don’t discount the.effect of a good man as leader.for four years.
